CFI ISO Classification of Financial Instruments (CFI Code)  – datatype (CFI)

 

The 6 character ISO 10962 “Classification of Financial Instruments” code, commonly known as the CFI Code.

 

The CFI Code is used in the financial services industry to classify and describe the structure and function of a financial instrument. Each financial instrument should receive a CFI Code at the same time it is allocated an ISIN by the respective National Numbering Agency.

 

The CFI consists of six alphabetical characters, and normally remains unchanged during the instruments lifetime.

  The first character indicates the highest level of classification, Asset Category. For example: E = equities, D = debt

  The second character indicates specific Groups within each Asset Category. For example for equities: S = shares, P = Preferred Shares, D = Depository Receipt

  The third to sixth characters indicate the following attributes of the asset:

  Voting Right

  Ownership/transfer restrictions

  Payment status

  Form
