Datastream Geographical Classification of Company - Datatype (GEOGC)

The Datastream geographical classification of a company, by form of a 2-character mnemonic issued by Datastream.

GEOGC is aimed at providing the company’s area of business activity or base. At the point of IPO security creation, GEOGC will be set by company Domicile, with the expectation the Domicile is the base of the company’s business and operations.

Exceptions exist if it is suspected there is no obvious economic activity within that Domicile, in such cases the IPO place of listing will be taken. See list of impacted Domiciles below:

• Bermuda
• British Virgin Islands
• Cayman Islands
• Guernsey
• Isle of Man
• Jersey

Similarly, if the Domicile is not available at the time of security creation then the IPO place of listing will be taken.

The GEOGC setting is periodically reviewed and is subject to change if considered inaccurate

** In November 2023 the Datastream geographical classification methodology was revised to the rules stated above – for more information please see DN207859**

The classification can also be viewed by a Code (GEOG) and Name (GEOGN), or by the ISO Country Code (GGISO).

Note, for Exchange Traded Commodities (ETC), Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) and Exchange Traded Notes (ETN) GEOGC represents the instrument’s Domicile.

See the Datastream Geographical Classifications Classifications table for the full list of possible values and ISO country code mapping.
